Our housing saga continues here in Sicily.
Today I decided the kids and I should pay a personal visit to the housing office again to ask for an update (and I definitely didn’t tell the kids to look sad and ask, “can we please have our house?”). Our housing counselor wasn’t available, but they sent me to see the utilities counselor instead.
Well. She had some interesting things to say. And suddenly things make a lot more sense …
Me: “Ok, so I know the last tenant didn’t pay their bills, but — ”
Her, interrupting: “She paid her bills. We have receipts.”
Me, confused: “I’m sorry. I must have misunderstood?”
Her: “No, no, that’s what she kept saying but it’s not true. We have the receipts, she paid her bills. We check you out when you leave the island and make sure …” (went on a little about this a bit.)
Me: “Oh, okay. Weird. I thought she was angry about Americanos?” (Our housing counselor had told us she was complaining about two bad experiences with American tenants.
Her, “Um. I think she was a little bit stressed out. Her husband is in the hospital.”
So what she ended up telling me is that the dispute with the electric company is actually related to her buying LED lights from the electric company for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT HOUSE. What?! I guess there is some kind of hold on her account, which is why they won’t change it from her name to our name. (Not, as we thought, from the old tenant’s name to ours.)
So, we still don’t have an answer but are expecting one today. The woman we talked to sounds confident that it should be able to be sorted out. I hope she is right! I really want the house, even though I’m obviously side-eyeing our landlord pretty hard right now. The housing counselor told us that a lot of people have worked with her over the years though and things have always been great, so let’s just hope this was a minor blip.
