We didn’t love renting car seats the times that we’ve done it — it often costs as much as the car itself! Now that our big has gotten large enough to use a booster seat, it’s gotten easier because we only have to haul one large seat (Fiona’s). A major concession that we’ve made is generally renting a car directly at the airport (which can be a bit more expensive), so that we don’t have far to haul the seats on public transit. We actually rented a car in Edinburgh three days earlier than we actually needed it and parked it in a garage, partially because it was easier than hauling suitcases + carseats (and three extra days of renting an entire car was cheaper than 11 days of rented car seats). I don’t know how old your kids are or how many you have, but I’d suggest trying to bring your own seats if at all feasible.
